There's something very attractive about agar agar or also known as katen in Japan – according to an article published in a Japanese magazine, consuming agar agar with your favorite tea 10 minutes before your meal can promote weight loss. Apparently, agar agar's high fiber content helps maintain a feeling of fullness and therefore reduce overeating. And, interestingly, agar agar has zero calories.
Today, I'm sharing with you a refreshing agar jello dessert recipe that's not too
heavy and great for family get-
(serves 4 to 6)
Ingredients:
10 grams agar agar strands or
6 teaspoons agar agar powder
6 teaspoons plus 1 cup granulated sugar
2 egg yolks
⅓ cup evaporated skim milk
2¼ cups plus 8 tablespoons water
To make caramel, place 1 cup granulated sugar and 8 tablespoons in a heavy saucepan.
Cook over very gentle heat and stir constantly, making sure the sugar is dissolved and then increase the heat to medium till the solution turn deep golden in color and starts to boil.
In another saucepan, combine agar agar with remaining water and boil until agar agar dissolved.
Add sugar and continue boiling until agar agar is completely dissolved.
Beat egg yolks with milk and stir into agar agar mixture. Stir agar agar mixture into caramel.
Pour into a mold, allow agar agar mixture to cool before putting into the refrigerator to set.
When agar agar has set, turn it out on a serving plate and serve with mixed fruits. Enjoy!
