I'm asking for a good homemade hair mask recipe for dry hair. My hair used to be silky and soft, but it's now in really bad condition after one too many hair dye jobs. It's terribly dry at the ends, has no shine and feels almost like straw. I'm using Kerastase products but they're too expensive for a broke student like me. Please advise on how can I make my hair soft and shiny again? – Sabrina, Iowa.

Hi Sabrina,
I'm so happy to share with you this all-
Avocado is one of the best natural ingredients for hair treatments because avocado oil is loaded with many essential Vitamins and proteins that are needed to help condition and hydrate the scalp and hair.
In addition, studies have shown that avocado oil penetrates the skin (and hair shaft)
more easily and deeply than almond, olive and safflower oils. Hence, the avocado
fruit makes an ideal deep-
I'd suggest you use the avocado hair mask every other day for the first week to help restore your hair's lost moisture and nutrients, and once or twice a week thereafter to maintain and protect against dryness.
As an added bonus, this super rich avocado hair mask can also double as a moisturizing face mask for dry skin. If your skin is naturally oily, simply add ½ teaspoon freshly squeeze lemon juice.
The answer to your second question – how can I make my hair soft and shiny again – is very simple.
First up, limit the use of heat styling appliances such as hair dryers, flat irons and hot rollers as they will worsen dry damaged hair. If you really must use heat, my advice is to prep your mane with a protective solution or serum before you style. Try Aveda Damage Control Spray. And, make sure to avoid hair sprays or gels that contain alcohol, which will dry out your hair.
Frequent hair washing can do more harm than good for damaged hair. Some shampoos may contain harsh chemicals like sodium lauryl sulfate, which can strip your locks of its natural oils, leaving it dry and lifeless. Therefore you want to shampoo your hair every other day, unless it's overly greasy.
Also, don't forget to use a high-
Pampering your hair with a weekly mask deep conditioning regimen is absolutely essential. This will revitalize nutrient deprived, weak hair and repair damage caused by too many chemical treatments such as perms, hair relaxing, hair coloring, and hair bleaching.
Last but not least, eat a wide variety of protein-
Beans, nuts (Brazil nuts, walnuts, cashews, almonds and pecans) eggs, and green leafy vegetables (spinach, broccoli, Swiss chard) are among the best foods to repair dry damaged hair.
Ingredients
1 ripe avocado (medium to long hair)
2 tablespoons natural plain yogurt
2 tablespoons olive oil
½ tablespoon honey (optional)
1. Peel avocado, remove seeds and mash flesh with the back of a fork. Transfer to a bowl. Add yogurt, olive oil and honey (if using). Mix into a thick, smooth and creamy paste.
2. Part your hair into a few sections, and generously spread the avocado hair mask
through your hair. Make sure to cover all hair. Using fingertips, gently massage
it into your scalp and hair for 4-
3. Cover your hair with either saran wrap or wear an old shower cap. Leave it on for at least 30 minutes to maximize the deep conditioning treatment and then wash off completely.
Take note that avocados are perishable, therefore it is best you use your homemade avocado hair mask immediately, or keep it in the refrigerator for no longer than 48 hours. To keep avocado hair treatment fresh, cover bowl tightly with a plastic wrap.
You can tweak this homemade avocado hair mask recipe by substituting yogurt with a ripe banana and an egg. Both ingredients are very moisturizing and will make your hair incredibly smooth and glossy!
