Let's face it, there's no magic bullet in weight loss. The closest to a magic bullet is exercise. We become overweight when we take in more calories than we burn up. To lose weight, we need to create a calorie deficit through diet, exercise or a combination of both.

 

Exercise is crucial to any weight loss program. According to statisics, making exercise a part of your weight loss program can increase your results by up to 50 percent.

 

Not only does exercise increase your metabolism during a workout, exercise also cause your metabolism to stay increased for a period of time after exercising, which means you burn more calories even while you snooze.

 

 

What Exercises Burn the Most Calories?

 

All exercise, regardless whether it is cardio or strength training, burns calories. However, certain types of exercise burn more calories than others. In my opinion, cardio exercise is probably the best exercise for weight loss and maximum fat burning.

 

 

Cardiovascular exercise or cardio for short (also known as areobic exercise) is an activity that involves the use of large muscles (such as legs) in the body continuously for at least 20 minutes or more. It gets your heart rate up and increases blood cirulation.

 

 

There are various types of cardio exercises which can be done both indoors and outdoors. Some of these include running on the treadmill, jumping rope and step arerobics. Rock climbing, bicycling, inline skating, swimming, and skiing also rank among the best cardio exercises for fat burning and weight loss.

 

 

Rock climbing can burn about 400 calories in 30 minutes while breaststroke swimming will melt away 400 calories. Depending on resistance and speed, biking can burn anywhere between 250 to 500 calories. A half hour long workout with an elliptical trainer can burn off 300 calories.

 

 

Most fitness expert agree that doing cardio exercises first thing in the morning, before eating, is the most effective for weight loss.

 

 

When cardio exercise is performed prior to eating breakfast, the body burns stored fat (instead of carbs) and as a result, burns calories. And, for maximum weight loss results, working out for a period of 60 minutes at moderate intensity, 3 to 5 times a week is recommended.

 

 

To keep exercise interesting, try mixing the exercises up (interval cardio work). For example, do the elliptical trainer for 15 minutes, then ride on the stationary bike for another 15 minutes and finish off on the treadmill for the last 15 minutes, if you can.
