Botox (Botulinum toxin type A) is a quick and simple FDA-approved non-invasive procedure. Generally speaking, no anesthesia is required during the treatment, but your doctor may choose to numb the area with a cold pack or anesthetic cream before injecting. There is no post-injection discomfort or swelling, although some patients may compare the sensation to a pin prick at the injection.

The benefits of botox treatment will not stay forever. Its amazing skin-smoothing and age-reversing effects usually last anywhere from 3 to 6 months, and you need to maintain it with repeated injections, every 4 to 6 months.

That said, a small number of people develop neutralizing antibodies to botox injections after continued use, which results in the treatment no longer being effective.

Are Botox Injections Safe?

Botox has already been used since the 70s and are relatively safe when administered by a trained medical professional. As with all treatments, there are some side effects associated with botox, but most of these are mild and temporary.

Pain, tenderness and bruising are common side effects, and some people experience a mild headache, nausea or flu-like symptoms after botox injections. Botox injections on the face may also cause temporary drooping eyelids.

You should let your doctor know if you feel something that just does not seem right after the botox injections. He or she will be able to diagnose and treat the problem.

Not everyone is a good candidate for botox treatments. They are not recommended for people with certain rare neuromuscular disorders such as ALS, myasthenia gravis or Lambert-Eaton syndrome. Also, botox therapy should not be used if you are pregnant or breast feeding.
