I am battling with a sudden pimple/acne breakout on my bum cheeks and inner thighs
near the groin area for about weeks. They are red but not itchy and not painful.
The ones on my buttocks are the size of pinheads while those on my thighs look like
small pea-sized bumps. I want to know if it is okay to use over-the-counter acne
treatment cream like Clearasil to help get rid of butt acne? If you know of any home
remedies that clear butt pimples fast, please suggest. Thank you in advance for your
help. – Robin, Michigan.
Butt Acne (Buttne) Home Remedies
Even if the pimples or red bumps on your backside are not painful or itchy, I'd definitely
advise you to seek help from a doctor or a dermatologist to rule out any sexually
transmitted diseases like herpes. If it has nothing to do with STDs, your doctor
may put you on an oral antibiotic to treat acne on buttocks (more correctly known
as folliculitis on the butt – when your hair follicles get infected).
Yes, Clearasil is perfectly safe to use on your body and will work well if the buttne
is mild to moderate in severity. Salicylic acid (peeling agent) and benzoyl peroxide
(antibacterial agent) commonly found in many over-the-counter acne treatment products
help remove dead skin cells, unclog pores and control excess oil.
You may want to also wash the affected areas with a non-drying body acne cleanser
daily to prevent further inflammation and keep skin healthy. Try Aveeno or Neutrogena
Body Clear Body Wash, both are reasonably priced. Lather and leave it on your skin
for about 5 minutes before rinsing.
Before I go on to your next question on home treatments for butt acne, there are
a couple of things you should know to avoid getting those unsightly red, painful
pimples on your buttocks in the first place.
1. Products that are enhanced with fragrances or perfumes such as scented soaps,
shower gels, body lotions, laundry detergents and fabric softeners may cause considerable
skin irritation in some people. Think about whether you have recently changed detergents,
soaps or other personal care products. That heavily-scented body moisturizer might
be the true culprit behind your butt acne.
2. Butt acne can be caused by sitting down for long periods of time and covering
your bum in tight clothing because they trap heat and moisture from sweat, thereby
causing pimples and uncomfortable itching. So make sure to wear clothes made of natural
fibers like cotton which absorb sweat and allow your skin to breathe. Avoid ill-fitting,
too-tight synthetic fabric underwear such as nylon or polyester.
You can apply some cornstarch powder on your buttocks before dressing up to keep
the area dry at all times. This will also help relieve itching and other irritations
associated with pimples.
Also, remove your clothes and shower as soon as you finish your workout or after
doing other physical activities that cause you to perspire. The reason is simple.
You want to wash away the sweat, bacteria and natural oils which can clog up pores,
contributing to acne breakouts. Longer exposures to perspiration, dirt and sebum
mean a greater probability of developing pimples on your bum. You may want to consider
using rubbing alcohol wipes on your buttocks after each shower.
If your job requires you to sit for long hours at a stretch, try to stand up for
a few minutes so that the skin on your behind has a chance to breathe and also prevent
the pimples from getting pricked and becoming infected, leading to dark marks and
3. Pimples on buttocks can be significantly prevented by eating a healthy low fat
diet along with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. Some people claim that excessive
consumption of fatty foods – pizzas, nuts and chocolate – can activate the sebaceous
(oil) glands and cause pimples as well as acne to start popping out. So you might
want to see if a low fat diet helps improve your butt acne problem.
Don't forget to drink enough fluids, about 8-10 glasses per day, to help cleanse
out accumulated toxins in your body. Drinking a cup of warm water with lemon, first
thing in the morning before you eat your breakfast is a great way to detox and keep
body acne at bay.
