The mere mention of Diwali brings to mind gatherings with family and friends, sharing scrumptious meals and enjoying good moments together. Weeks before Diwali, households will be abuzz with activities – adorning the house with traditional Ranoli, patterns, divas, and candles, and spending hours in the kitchen whipping up many delicious delicies including Mithais.
Mithais are are a part of Diwali delebration. Without Mithais, Diwali isn't conmplete. Mithais are traditional Diwali sweets that every house greets its visitor, and are often given out as gifts to family and friends.
Although there's commercially prepared Mithais available in shops, many families I know including myself prefer to make Mithais at home. By doing so, we're able to take control of the ingredients and make Mithais healthy with less sugar and oil.
Even if you don't celebrate Diwali, you can still enjoy these wonderful Diwali sweets as much as we do. One of our family's favorites is coconut burfi, and in my opinion, these Indian sweets are the easiest to make.
The ingredients needed:
1 cup sugar
1 cup water*
2 teaspoons ghee (clarified butter)
1 cup fresh grated coconut
6 cardamoms, crushed
¼ cup chopped cashew nuts

In a saucepan, heat sugar and water on a low heat to make a thick syrup. Then remove any scum from the syrup.
Next, add coconut and crushed cardamoms, and mix together thoroughly.
Remove saucepan
from heat while the mixture is still a thick pouring consistency, and add the chopped
cashew nuts. Again, mix well.
Pour mixture onto the greased pan and quickly spread using a spatula.
Allow mixture to cool for a few minutes. Then cut into diamond-
