5 Fun Ideas to Keep Preschoolers Busy While You Cook
By Holly Campbell
Dyeing Easter eggs is really fun, and kids can create their colorful Easter eggs, using food colorings or natural dyes. Here is a nice, simple way to dye and decorate eggs.
You'll need masking tape, scissors, eggs, food coloring, ½ cup water per color and 1 teaspoon vinegar per color.
1. Hard boil your eggs in a saucepan. Meanwhile, cut a variety of shapes from the tape – circles, squares, diamonds, stars, hearts, moons or any other shapes. Your kids may want to use stickers to keep the eggshell from absorbing color.
2. Remove eggs from saucepan, and allow to cool completely.
3. Press the tape or stickers firmly onto the eggs in any pattern you like, to block off the areas you want to remain that color.
4. Boil some water, and add 1 teaspoon vinegar and 20 drops food coloring.
5. Drop in the eggs, slowly into the boiling water for about 5 minutes, or longer if you want a deeper color.
6. Carefully remove the eggs. Place on a cooling rack to cool and dry.
7. When the eggs are dry, carefully remove the tape. If you want nice shiny eggs,
rub them gently with a paper towel that have been dampened with 1-
You can repeat this process for as many colors as you like. If you want plain colored eggs, just omit the steps with the tape.
Red: soak red onion peels with vinegar or you can use juice extracted from red beets or blueberries.
Yellow: soak yellow onion peels, or use saffron.
Green: spinach water.
Brown: tea.
With simple steps like these, why buy packaged egg coloring kits when you can use what you already have in the pantry to dye Easter eggs?
