What can I put on dry leg skin to make it smooth? I've a very bad case of extremely dry skin patches on legs in winter that is really itchy and looks like dried snake skin. I've seen a dermatologist and he said there's nothing to worry about. Definitely not eczema; just a temporary dry skin problem due to very cold weather and dry air. I'm so embarrassed to have them seen and wonder what home remedies or products you would recommend to treat and smooth away dry leg skin. Thank you. – Carolyn, Seattle.

Hi Carolyn,
Skin dryness is one of the most common skin issues in extreme weather conditions such as biting winds and bitterly cold winter. The lack of moisture in cold air dehydrates your skin, causing smooth layers of cells that are held together by protein and carbohydrates, among other things, to fall apart. When this happens, microbes and irritants can penetrate into your skin, causing inflammation and itching.
I would advise you apply a rich body moisturizer on your legs, preferably one with a sealant like dimethicone to help seal in moisture and protect dry scaly leg skin from environmental stresses. In my own experience, Vaseline Clinical Therapy and Aqualant by Green Cream Moisture Sealant seem to work very well. Both products soothe dry scaly skin, and create the appearance of softer, more supple, and smoother skin.
If you want a natural and holistic approach to treat and moisturize dry scaly skin, my suggestion is use honey.
Why is honey so good for dry itchy skin? Honey is chock full of natural antioxidants that nourish and keep your skin in tip top condition – healthy, youthful and glowing – by protecting skin against the the sun's damaging UV rays.
In addition, honey is a natural humectant that draws moisture from the air and lock it in your skin to fight skin dryness. Plus, the powerful antibacterial and antimicrobial properties of honey, particularly manuka honey, help smooth and relieve itchy dry skin.
Honey and Milk Leg Bath
Honey will revive and moisturize dry skin while lactic acid in milk acts as an exfoliant to slough off dead skin cells to allow newer, radiant skin to surface. Milk also helps your skin to retain its natural oils and moisture.
As a bonus, this honey milk bath has super skin whitening actions to get your legs ready for summer micro mini shorts and skirts. Regular honey milk baths will help lighten dark marks, reduce dark pigmented skin on lower calves, whiten dark knees and get rid of dark patches on ankles.
Soak your legs in a warm bath of whole milk (about 1 cup) and honey (2 tablespoons)

Honey and Oatmeal Leg Scrub
Oats is an effective home remedy to get rid of dry scaly skin as it gently exfoliates away dead skin while softening and healing skin tissue. Like honey, oatmeal is a humectant and attracts moisture to your skin, leaving it hydrated and feeling luxuriously smooth.

Honey Coconut Apricot Body Lotion
Virgin coconut oil is excellent stuff for healing dry itchy skin. Not only it soothes irritated skin, the oil also prevents microbial and bacterial infections. Furthermore, virgin coconut oil won't clog pores and is easily absorbed into the skin.
Sunflower seed oil is rich in EFAs (essential fatty acids) and well-
Place ¼ cup virgin coconut oil in a heatproof bowl over a pan of simmering water. Slowly stir in 1 tablespoon sunflower seed oil, 2 tablespoons apricot kernel oil and 1 tablespoon pure honey once the coconut oil has melted. Mix all ingredients until well blended. Transfer to a container, label and leave to cool and set.
To use, take a generous amount of your homemade body lotion and lightly massage onto damp skin after your bath or shower.
