By Kate Miller
Every Easter, I make Easter nests the simple way using either chow mein, cornflakes or rice crispies as the main ingredient. This year, for a bit of challenge and change, I decide to make Easter nest breads.
These individual decorative tasty buns look like adorable nests with a coloured egg sitting in the centre. Serve these cute small breads on Easter breakfast table to surprise your children and guests! I am pretty your children will surely gobble them up in minutes!
Ingredients for 10 small nests breads:
500g (1lb) plain flour
30g (1oz) fresh yeast
250ml
(8 fl oz) lukewarm milk
50g (2oz) butter
1 egg
Pinch of salt
1 egg yolk, beaten to glaze
10
eggs, boiled for 5 minutes
Preheat the oven to moderately hot, 200 degrees Celsius or 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
Sift the flour into a bowl and form a well in the centre. Cream the yeast with a little of the milk then add the rest of the remaining milk.
Pour into the well and sprinkle a little flour. Cover and leave to stand in a warm
place for 15 minutes, until frothy.
Melt butter, beat with egg, salt and work into
the flour and yeast mixture to obtain a dry dough. Knead well and leave to rise for
an hour.
Divide dough into pieces and floured hands, form into balls. Roll the balls into
25 cm or 10 inch lengths, twist to form spirals, form into a circle and knot the
ends.
Place the nests on a greased baking tray, brush with the beaten egg yolk and
place an egg in the centre. Leave to stand for 10 minutes.
Bake for 15 to 20 minutes.
After baking, decorate eggs with edible dyes. Happy Easter!
