Foods for Healthy and Wrinkle-Free Skin

By Tiffany Moore

The secret to clear healthy skin begins from the inside. Many of us spend hundreds and even thousands of dollars on lotions, creams and serums in our pursuit of youthful, wrinkle-free skin. But most of these skin care products only give temporary solutions and they rarely address the underlying cause of our skin problems. Hence, the first step to beautiful and healthy skin starts with the right types of foods.

Best Foods for Wrinkles

One of the most important element of skin health is Vitamin A, a powerful sun inhibitor.

Vitamin A protects your skin from the harmful oxidative effects of UV rays and is required for developing and maintaining skin cells.

If you lack Vitamin A, your skin becomes dry and scaly.

Food sources of Vitamin A include cod liver oil, carrots, leafy vegetables, sweet potatoes and fortified breakfast cereals.

You also need to eat foods that are rich in antioxidants. Bright colored fruits, vegetables, cereals, legumes, nuts and seeds as well as green tea are very effective antioxidants.

Antioxidants fight the harmful effects of free radicals and prevent sun damage. This in turn protect you against premature aging and your skin looks younger. If you really want to reduce wrinkles, be sure to eat a balanced diet of fresh fruits and vegetables.

Essential fatty acids are vital for wrinkle-free skin as they keep cell membranes healthy, and allow nutrients to pass through. You should eat salmon, tuna, walnuts, canola oil, and flax seed.

Aside from essential fatty acids, you also need healthy oils to keep your skin supple. Try to include 2 tablespoons a day of good-quality oils that are cold pressed, such as olive or extra virgin oil.

But steer clear of trans-fats (labeled as hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils). They produce harmful byproducts for the skin, causing inflammation and wrinkles.

Selenium fights wrinkles by quenching free radicals caused by sun exposure and prevents skin damage. Foods such as wholegrain bread, cereals, muffins, turkey, tuna and Brazil nuts are excellent sources of selenium.

Processed and refined sugars increase insulin levels, leading to inflammation and aging. A diet that is high in sugar may result in acne-prone skin and also cause wrinkles.

Green tea has anti-inflammatory properties that not only protects the cell membrane but also prevents skin cancer.

Water rejuvenates skin cells and help remove toxins out from your body to keep you healthy. To stay hydrated and avoid dry skin, you should drink at least 6 to 8 glasses of water daily.

Caffeinated beverages, sugary drinks and alcohol do not count. Alcohol tends to dry out your skin and may cause an expansion of your blood vessels leading to red spots and itchiness.

You don't have to pay the high price tag of skin care products to stop wrinkles knowing what foods to eat and what to avoid can still give you radiant and healthy skin.
