Getting the "perfect" gift for an elderly parent is nerve-
I generally like keep things simple, nothing fancy or swanky. I look for gifts that are both practical and sentimental. You can start by exploring products or services that your parent uses on a continuous basis. It need not be an expensive item but something touches their hearts. Here are some ideas to help you decide on what to buy.
1. Everyone loves to look good. Surprise your parents with a visit to the hair salon
to have their hair done. It could be a simple haircut or some chemical work to touch
up greying roots, or maybe a pampering nail manicure.
2. Gather your siblings to chip in to pay for a large purchase your parents cannot
afford, such as a plasma television, new car, and hearing aids.
3. Offer to pay your parents' utilities bill for a month.
4. Sponsor your parents a membership at the gym or taichi or gardening classes. Enrol them for activities that they would enjoy.
5. Most of us are always busy with either work or our own family so spending quality
time with our parents seems almost impossible. I suggest you organise a "date night"
for you and your parents, and take them to their favorite restaurant for a nice meal
or to a concert or play.
6. If you are a creative person who enjoy making unique gifts, try putting together a scrapbook. Find old pictures and take the time to put them all down in a timeline.
Include significant events such as weddings, the birth of their first grandchild, childhood photos, their occupation, family gatherings, friends, old neighbours and even pets. This is very therapeutic for parents who are losing their memory slowly.
7. Put together a DVD or Videotape scrapbook. If your parent's eyesight is not good
enough to look at a regular scrapbook, then this is a perfect option.
8. Purchase music CDs from their era. It can be oldies or instrumental pieces. My
mother is a avid fan of Elvis Presley and she loves the entire CD collection that
I bought, it gets her singing and dancing with my father. It was an absolutely loving
sight, a special moment for my parents.
9. Have a precious photograph restored. If you have a photograph your parent would
love, but it has been damaged by water, torn, or discolored, check into photo restoration.
It will become a priceless possession, pass down to the next generation.
Whatever it is you decide to buy or do, the most important thing to remember is to follow your heart. Put a lot of thought and love into your gift, and you will never go wrong.
Most of the time, your parents are happy to know that they are still important to you. And, that’s your best gift for elderly parents.
