For a start, raisins keeps you regular and promote good colon health. The soluble fiber found in raisins swells with the absorption of water, thereby helping to regulate intestinal function and prevent constipation. Just like fresh grapes, raisins contain tartaric acid which works hand-in-hand with fiber to ensure proper elimination, and keep colon cancer away.

Aside from its high fiber content, raisins also contain good amounts of antioxidants – Vitamin A, A-Beta Carotene and A-Carotenoid – which are necessary for maintaining good ocular health. These antioxidant nutrients protect your eyes from free radical damage which otherwise can lead to a host of eye diseases including vision loss from age related macular degeneration, and cataracts.

Interestingly, did you know that raisins are also good for your bones?  Boron, a micro nutrient, present in raisins is essential for proper bone formation and calcium absorption. In conjunction with estrogen in women, boron helps strengthen bones and ward off osteoporosis induced by menopause.

Although raisins are high in fructose (70 percent), they are virtually fat free, and contain no cholesterol. Therefore, they make an ideal snack choice for underweight people who are trying to gain weight in a healthy way without accumulating cholesterol.

Surprisingly, consuming raisins in controlled portions may actually help weight loss. This is because the high levels of fiber help you feel fuller for a longer period so you are less likely to overeat while the natural sugars can satisfy strong sugar cravings and prevent you from snacking on unhealthy highly sweetened foods.

Raisins are also high in potassium and yet low in sodium. Potassium-rich foods have been proven to reduce blood pressure significantly.

In addition, raisins also have substantial amounts of dietray iron in them, which is helpful for treating iron deficiency anemia. Raisins also provide your body with a rich source of B-Vitamins and copper, both of which are required for red blood cell formation.

Moreover, raisins also contain oleanolic acid, which is said to help fight dental bacteria and protect teeth from teeth decay as well as certain gum diseases.

That’s not all to its health-enhancing benefits. Raisins are also good for acidosis, fever, heart health and is particularly helpful beneficial in treating problems in erection.

So for a healthy dose of antioxidants, keep a can of Sun Maid raisins in your refrigerator or in your office pantry for a handy healthful snack anytime. You can also add raisins to soups and stews, or sprinkle a small handful over your salads, or incorporate them in home-baked goods such as cookies, cakes, muffins and breads.

Health Benefits of Raisins

My love affair with raisins started with the California raisins commercial in the 80s. Row of Motown rock stars raisins dancing and singing “Heard it through the Grapevine”. Oh, they were so adorable and sure, they danced right into my life, my meals, and my lunch box! Even till now, I snack on raisins because these dried grapes have tons of health benefits that are just too good to resist!
