Herbs for Hair Growth and Hair Loss Treatment

By Diane Hanson

Across the globe, men and women who suffer from hair loss problems are relentless in their search for the most effective hair growth remedy. Although, there are a wide array of hair loss products and medications available in the market, most people find it difficult to choose one that suit them best.

If you're looking for good hair regrowth products, always make sure you read the ingredient label. Natural herbs are safe and highly effective in treating hair related problems including balding. Let's look at some herbs that are believed to promote hair growth and reduce the rate of hair loss.

1. Saw palmetto, a palm plant native to the Atlantic coast in the southern United States, has sterols and fatty acids that can help in hair growth.

This plant is basically an inhibitor of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), an androgen that plays a significant role in balding or loss of hair. Saw palmetto extract can reduce the level of DHT being absorbed by hair follicles and hence, hair start growing again.

2. Gamma linoleic acid is an excellent fatty acid that produces prostaglandin which, in turn, can help delay hair loss in men.

While black currant and evening primrose are also good sources for gamma linoleic acid, studies show borage seeds to be the richest source of this fatty acid, containing 20-30%, more than twice that of the more popular evening primrose.

Regardless of the cause of hair loss, including borage seed oil (100-500mg daily) in your diet can prevent further loss and encourage hair growth.

3. Green tea extract has demonstrated the ability to block certain enzymes in the body that can trigger hair loss or hair thinning and produce significant hair regrowth .

Although all types of tea come from the same plant species, green tea is said to have the highest percentage of EGCG (Epigallocatchin Gallate) as it is produced without fermentation or drying.

Green tea extract not only has antibacterial and antiseptic properties but also rich in nutrients that help nourish follicles and ensure healthy hair growth. Green tea extract can be used to treat dandruff as well.

4. Another effective herb that can help you grow your hair is habanero. Habanero is a type of small and extremely hot tropical pepper which is proven to stimulate blood flow to the scalp and provides the hair follicles with more nutrients, resulting in improved hair growth.

Aside from using herbs to stimulate hair growth, keep in mind that a healthy body and lifestyle are also important for growing healthy hair. Therefore, be sure to eat a balanced diet and manage stress so as to retard the rate of hair loss.
