Please tell me what can I do to get rid of split ends for good. I've been trying
to grow my hair long for months, but it keeps splitting and breaking at the ends!
I've tried several hair products that claim to hydrate and treat split ends, but
they don't seem to make them any better. I'm just wondering what homemade remedies
can I use to repair or fix split ends. Thanks. – Sarah, Wisconsin.
Home Remedies to Fix Split Ends
Trichoptilosis, commonly known as splits ends are usually caused by a bunch of things
you do to beautify your tresses. Overuse of heat appliances (blow dryers, curling
irons, flat irons), and frequent use of harsh products (hair dyes, relaxers, bleaches)
alter the natural protein bonds in your hair, making it more vulnerable to breakage
In addition, improper hair brushing or detangling techniques, and environmental factors
such as extreme weather, including both hot and cold will also contribute to split
ends. Therefore, it's a good idea to figure out what was the most likely cause of
your split end problem in order to protect the ends of your hair from splitting further
and causing severe damage.
Other than using store-bought split end mender or sealer to repair and add moisture
to dry brittle ends, there are many natural homemade remedies for split ends that
you can use to smooth away tears in damaged locks.
But before you do anything else, I'd strongly suggest you cut off the split end of
the damaged hair yourself at home (at least ¼ inch above the split), or go to a professional
salon, if you're not comfortable about trimming your tresses.
Homemade Treatments to Get Rid of Split Ends and Condition Dry Hair
1. You've probably heard of mayonnaise as home remedy to condition dry hair and fix
split ends, but be warned, mayo makes your hair smell bad for days. Use olive oil
or coconut oil instead.
Both olive oil and coconut oil are excellent natural humectants that draw and lock
moisture into hopelessly dry hair. So, treating your hair with any of these oils
regularly (at least 2-3 times a week) will help revive dry brittle ends, reduce damage
caused by harsh products, and hence improve the overall health of your locks.
Combine ½ cup each of olive oil and boiling water, and then warm the mixture in a
microwave or stove top over low heat. Gently massage into your scalp and hair, concentrating
on the middle and ends of your hair. Wrap your hair in a hot towel, shower cap, or
plastic wrap for at least 30 minutes before you shampoo.
2. If you hate the smell of olive oil, use this dry-hair-split-ends treatment. Pour
½ cup olive oil into a jar with a lid, and add about 5 drops of essential oil such
as lavender, rosemary, sandalwood, myrrh, geranium, or chamomile to mask olive oil
smell. If you've an itchy scalp, use tea tree essential oil. Tea tree oil has powerful
antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties.
Cover the jar and shake vigorously to help disperse the essential oil. Leave it to
sit for 24 hours in a cool, dark place.
Before you use the olive oil hair remedy, make sure to rinse your hair with warm
water first. Shake the jar and pour 1-2 tablespoons of your homemade split end repair
into your palms and warm it by rubbing your hands together. Lightly massage into
the scalp using your fingertips, in a circular motion. Cover your hair with a shower
cap or put a large plastic bag over your head and secure with a hair clip or clothespin.
Wait for 30-40 minutes and then shampoo as usual.
3. Another good homemade remedy for treating dry brittle hair and split ends is to
apply a hair mask made from egg yolk, olive oil, and natural honey at least once
a week. Egg yolk not only helps fortify and protect hair from split ends and breakage,
it also promotes hair growth. Honey, like olive oil, attracts and seal in moisture,
leaving your hair beautifully soft and well hydrated.
Place 1 tablespoon honey, 1 tablespoon olive oil and 1 egg yolk in a small bowl.
Mix all ingredients together until well combined. Take small amounts of your homemade
split end hair mask and apply on different sections of your hair. Put on an old shower
cap and then shampoo after 20-30 minutes.
4. You can also use a homemade avocado dry hair mask to condition and strengthen
brittle hair, and shield it against future damage. Avocado is extremely rich in many
Vitamins (especially Vit E) and proteins that are needed to nourish, repair, and
hydrate damaged lackluster hair.
Mash up the flesh of 1 medium sized ripe avocado with the back of a fork, and a splash
of olive oil. Spread on your damp hair from roots to tips, combing through the and
focusing on the ends. Leave avocado hair mask on for about 20 minutes or more. Rinse
and style as usual.
If you want some serious deep conditioning, add 1 small ripe banana and 1 egg yolk,
or honey to avocado.
5. Someone told me that beer is a terrific remedy to fix split ends because the proteins
and sugars in beer bonds to the hair shaft, thereby fortifying dry hair and split
ends, and giving your hair a silky and healthy shine. I have yet to try out this
split end home treatment, but here's how to use beer as a hair conditioner.
First, pour a small amount of light beer (enough to cover your hair) into an empty
spray pump bottle. Then spray beer evenly onto your hair after shampooing and towel
dry. Style as normal. Don't worry, you won't smell like you've drenched in a pool
of beer as the scent will quickly dissipate.
