About Niche Topics

By Tiffany Moore

If you think utterly fabulous skin comes from an expensive bottle of anti-aging serum, then you are mistaken. It starts from one simple step – exfoliation – critical to beautifully luminous and youthful complexion, but often skipped by many in their weekly skin care regimen.

Your skin naturally sheds billions of skin cells each day, however, this skin renewal process can gradually slow or even stopped due to a number of factors such as aging, sun damage, stress and environmental pollution. Because of this slow down in cell regeneration, old and dead cells accumulate on your skin’s surface, resulting in various signs of skin aging like uneven skin tone, dull flaky skin, facial wrinkles and fine lines.

When you exfoliate your face on a regular basis, it helps remove the layer of dead skins to allow newer cells to emerge so your complexion takes on a smoother-than-silk feel and also appears instantly brighter.

If you always have a problem with whiteheads, blackheads or pimples, here’s the good news. Exfoliation, especially with fruit enzymes, can do wonders to purify the skin and unclog pores by loosening and dissolving dead tissues and other pore clogging particles.

In addition to all those amazing skin-enhancing benefits of regular scrubbing, it will also improve blood circulation and prepare your face for toning. Using a toner after cleansing your face is also important as it helps minimize pores while promoting proper pH balance.

While commercial facial scrubs may first come to your mind, but the probem with them is, they often contain ingredients that are too harsh for extra sensitive dry skin. My suggestion is of course, make natural homemade face scrubs at home using ultra-gentle, non-abrasive ingredients such as oatmeal.

Why oatmeal? This humble breakfast staple is abundant in many nutrients –  Vitamins A, B and E – that help support healthy growth and has been used for centuries to beautify the skin. Interestingly, ancient Greeks and Romans used “oat baths” to heal many skin problems like skin rashes because of its ability to gently clean, moisturize and soothe dry itchy skin.

It may sound too good to be true, but using this homemade oatmeal-milk face scrub 1-2 times a week offers remarkable results. It refines rough dry skin, helping to smooth out wrinkles and fine lines as it leaves the skin intensely hydrated. Your face will feel velvety soft and as smooth as baby’s bottom under one minute!

You can also use this DIY facial scrub as a natural face lightening mask. The lactic acid found in milk works as a natural exfoliant to remove the outer layer of skin to reveal a brighter, lighter and more even skin complexion. Simply spread on clean face, avoiding the areas around eyes, and leave it to work its magic for about 15-20 minutes before washing off with lukewarm water.

Your homemade oatmeal face scrub recipe is good for normal to dry skin and is very kind on sensitive skin, especially for those suffering from eczema.

How to make oatmeal face scrub

1. Place oatmeal and milk powder in a bowl; mix both ingredients thoroughly with a spoon.

2. Transfer the mixture to a air-tight container. Use your natural face scrub within 6 months.

3. To use, add 2 teaspoons water to 2 teaspoons of your homemade oatmeal face scrub mixture. Mix until you get a spreadable paste. Add more water, if necessary. Allow the facial scrub to thicken a bit, and then massage onto your face and throat. Rinse off completely with lukewarm water to leave your face feeling fresh and clean.

By the way, if you love a high tech option and very willing to pay for sparkly clear energized skin, try Clarisonic. These skin cleaning brushes claim to deep clean pores to remove impurities and keep bothersome acne at bay.
