Homemade Strawberry Jam Recipe

By Kate Miller

In an effort to slash my family's monthly grocery bill, I always buy strawberries when they're on special and make strawberry jam. Homemade strawberry jam can save you a good deal of money especially if you've a large family to feed.

This quick and easy strawberry jam recipe comes from my late grandmother, and it's the best jam recipe without pectin. The jam is soft, spreadable and delicious on bread, toast, scones, or crackers. Great as gifts for friends as well. Try it!

Homemade Strawberry Jam Recipe

Ingredients:

6 lbs strawberries

4½ lbs sugar

How to make strawberry jam

1. The day before you wish to make the jam, hull and halve the strawberries. Check for soft spots (which must be removed) and throw away any bruised or overripe berries.

2. In a large saucepan, boil the berries without water, for 20 minutes.

3. Remove from heat and add sugar. Stir until dissolved, then return to heat.

4. Bring to a boil and boil for 10 minutes.

5. Ladle strawberry jam into the sterilized jars. Use a jam funnel, if you own one, to avoid spilling too much jam.

6. Cover the top surface of the jam in each jar with waxed paper discs that have been cut to size. Seal with a lid while still hot, label and store in a cool, dark place or refrigerated.

Once you know the basic techniques of jam making, you can use this same recipe to make different types of berry jam. Enjoy!
