The best way to avoid health risks from additives in oral care products is to make your own toothpaste at home. There is no need to buy special ingredients to make homemade toothpaste; just a few simple ingredients that great grandma used a long long time ago to keep teeth clean and white, and gums healthy.
1. This is the easiest method to clean your teeth. Make a paste of baking soda and a few drops of hydrogen peroxide.
Wet your toothbrush and start brushing. It will not only make your mouth fresh and clean, the peroxide also helps to whiten your teeth.
2. This toothpaste recipe calls for baking soda and essential oils. Combine ½ teaspoon of baking soda with ½ teaspoon of finely ground sea salt and a drop of peppermint, spearmint, orange, tea tree, clove or cinnamon oil for flavoring. Mix in a few drops of water to form a paste thick enough to stay on your toothbrush. Store in an air tight container.
3. My favorite homemade toothpaste recipe – mix together 2 tablespoons coconut oil,
3 tablespoons baking soda, ½ small packet of stevia powder and 20-
4. If you've sensitive teeth, this natural toothpaste recipe works wonders. Mix together ½ cup of vegetable glycerin (serves as a base), equal amount of cosmetic clay (works as a mild abrasive) in a bowl. Then add 7 to 8 drops of peppermint or spearmint, 7 to 8 drops of clove essential oil and 35 to 40 drops of tincture of myrrh.
This homemade toothpaste can also be stored in a bottle for future use. The clove oil works as a mild anesthetic to reduce tooth sensitivity, and tincture of myrrh is very effective to prevent gum inflammation. Peppermint and spearmint are great for freshening the mouth or to get rid of bad breath.
5. To make a tooth powder, add 1 teaspoon or 2 dried lemon or orange rind to a mixture of ¼ cup of baking soda and 1 teaspoon of table salt. Grind all ingredients together in a food processor. Store in an air tight container. To use, dip your moistened toothbrush into the powder.
The advantage of homemade toothpaste is you could avoid toxins, save a bit of money and the environment at the same time. Have fun experimenting!
