5 Homemade Toothpaste Recipes for Whiter and Cleaner Teeth
By Tiffany Moore
It may sound bizarre to you, but I make my own toothpaste because additives like
fluoride, flavoring, coloring, dyes and foaming agents are now standard ingredients
for name-brand toothpastes. Did you know that even if the toothpaste is never swallowed,
these additives can be absorbed within seconds through the skin on the lips, or through
the mucous membrane in the mouth?
The best way to avoid health risks from additives in oral care products is to make
your own toothpaste at home. There is no need to buy special ingredients to make
homemade toothpaste; just a few simple ingredients that great grandma used a long
long time ago to keep teeth clean and white, and gums healthy.
Make Toothpaste at Home
1. This is the easiest method to clean your teeth. Make a paste of baking soda and
a few drops of hydrogen peroxide.
Wet your toothbrush and start brushing. It will not only make your mouth fresh and
clean, the peroxide also helps to whiten your teeth.
2. This toothpaste recipecalls for baking soda and essential oils. Combine ½ teaspoon
of baking soda with ½ teaspoon of finely ground sea salt and a drop of peppermint,
spearmint, orange, tea tree, clove or cinnamon oil for flavoring. Mix in a few drops
of water to form a paste thick enough to stay on your toothbrush. Store in an air
3. My favorite homemade toothpaste recipe– mix together 2 tablespoons coconut oil,
3 tablespoons baking soda, ½ small packet of stevia powder and 20-25 drops of peppermint
or spearmint oil in a small bowl. When you add the oil, start with half the amount
first. Test the toothpaste to see how "hot" you want.
4. If you've sensitive teeth, this natural toothpaste recipeworks wonders. Mix together
½ cup of vegetable glycerin (serves as a base), equal amount of cosmetic clay (works
as a mild abrasive) in a bowl. Then add 7 to 8 drops of peppermint or spearmint,
7 to 8 drops of clove essential oil and 35 to 40 drops of tincture of myrrh.
This homemade toothpaste can also be stored in a bottle for future use. The clove
oil works as a mild anesthetic to reduce tooth sensitivity, and tincture of myrrh
is very effective to prevent gum inflammation. Peppermint and spearmint are great
for freshening the mouth or to get rid of bad breath.
5. To make a tooth powder, add 1 teaspoon or 2 dried lemon or orange rind to a mixture
of ¼ cup of baking soda and 1 teaspoon of table salt. Grind all ingredients together
in a food processor. Store in an air tight container. To use, dip your moistened
toothbrush into the powder.
The advantage of homemade toothpaste is you could avoid toxins, save a bit of money
and the environment at the same time. Have fun experimenting!
