About Niche Topics

I've read a lot about the skin benefits of raw manuka honey that I'm thinking of pampering my mom with a home facial this Mother's Day weekend. But I don't know how to go about using honey on face and what to add to a basic honey face mask recipe for a person with normal to dry skin type and has some fine lines and wrinkles. Please help me out here! Thank you! – Trisha, Ohio.

Honey Face Masks for Dry Mature Skin

Hi Trisha,

That's so sweet of you to indulge your mom with a rejuvenating, anti-aging facial treatment at home without spending a lot of money.

Honey has long been hailed as a miracle beauty cure for a host of skin problems ranging from eczema and psoriasis to freckles and acne scarring. Timeless beauties like Cleopatra has used raw honey regularly to keep her skin looking velvety smooth, young and wrinkle free.

Manuka honey is a fabulous natural moisturizer to soften and smooth dry, moisture-starved skin because it boasts a wealth of antioxidants and powerful humectant properties. By that I mean honey attracts moisture the environment and locks into your skin to maintain good hydration level. So applying honey on your face at least once week (or more during the winter months) is a great way to replenish lost moisture and to restore a baby soft, supple feel to dehydrated skin.

What Can You Add to a Basic Honey Facial Mask?

There are a ton of common household kitchen ingredients that can be added to a basic honey facial mask. Things like avocado and eggs will greatly benefit women with dry mature skin. Avocado is packed with lots of skin-boosting nutrients such as Vitamins A, D, E, lecithin, and potassium. In addition, the avocado pear is also a rich source of sterolins (plant steroids), which are popularly believed to reduce age spots, repair sun damaged skin and heal scars. Therefore, using avocado and honey will soften fine lines and moisturize severely dry skin while nourishing it with antioxidants.

I also tend to add a drizzle of olive oil (or coconut oil), oatmeal and ripe mashed banana as these ingredients blended with honey are extremely gentle to my sensitive, rosacea-prone skin. Mineral-rich oatmeal cleanses and heals skin without irritation while helping to smooth and soften rough skin. Banana contains lots of potassium which helps with the growth of new skin cells, and therefore, will benefit dry mature skin or sun damaged skin.

If mom craves for whiter, lighter, brighter-looking skin complexion, add just a bit of milk or yogurt to the basic honey facial. The lactic acid in milk and yogurt acts as a natural skin bleach by removing dead skin cells and allow newer ones to come through. Hence, dark skin is naturally lightened over time.

Green apple, particularly Granny Smith, works really well as anti-wrinkle mask when used in combination with manuka honey. Not only will green apples soften and feed your skin with many potent antioxidants, they'll also add a glowing radiance to your face complexion.

For those with adult acne problems, try mixing raw honey with turmeric, cinnamon or aspirin.

I've picked out a few homemade honey face mask recipes that I feel will help hydrate dry mature aging skin while reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Hope your mom will really love these face masks, and you'll have fun putting them together for her. Have fun!

Honey Facial Mask Recipes for Dry Mature Skin

Anti Aging Avocado and Honey Face Mask

1. Place 2 tablespoons each of avocado flesh and manuka honey in a blender. Add 1 egg yolk and blend into a creamy consistency. If you don't have a blender, just mash with the back of a fork.

2. Apply avocado and honey face mask over your face and neck. Leave on for about 15-20 minutes, or longer, and wash away with lukewarm water.

Ultra Moisturizing Honey and Egg Face Mask

1. Place 1 tablespoon honey, 1 tablespoon plain yogurt and ½ teaspoon almond oil in a bowl. Add 1 egg yolk and stir all ingredients together until you get a thick, sticky paste.

2. Spread liberally onto face and allow to work upon skin for 5-10 minutes before rinsing.

Pore Minimizing Honey and Almond Face Scrub

1. Combine 2 tablespoons of honey with 3 tablespoons finely ground almonds in a small bowl. Add the juice of ½ orange. I also like to toss in some freshly ground mint, which leaves tired, stressed skin feeling instantly refreshed and invigorated. Mix everything until well combined.

2. Take a small amount of your homemade honey almond face scrub and gently massage your face to exfoliate. Make sure to avoid the areas around the eyes and mouth. Wash off with warm water. You can keep unused portion in the fridge for up to a week, but I highly suggest you use it as a body polish to remove remove dark spots from knees and elbows.

Cooling Anti-Wrinkle Green Apple Honey Facial Mask

1. Core 1 small green apple and cut into 4 pieces. Chop apples in a food processor, remove and stir in 2 tablespoons manuka honey. Chill apple-honey mixture for about 10 minutes or so.

2. Apply on face and neck using light tapping motions. Relax and wait for 15-20 minutes. Rinse off with tepid water.
