With a wide variety of cigar cutters available in the market today, it’s no wonder that there is so much confusion about the proper way to cut cigar for a flavourful smoke. Cutters vary in sizes, colours and finishes that promise to leave a nice simple opening in your cigar for a good draw.
Most smokers like to use Guillotine cutters, Wedge cutters or Punch cutters. If you cannot find a cutter around and unless you are very experienced, you can always use an extremely sharp knife or a pair of scissors to cut your cigar. It is much better than the old fashioned way of you simply biting off the head and causing the head part to be uneven and deteriorate as it is smoked.
That said, guillotine and punch cutters are the two most popular. Guillotine cutter which can be used on any shape cigar seems to be the favourite among smokers but it can truly require a certain level of practice and skill for a good proper cut. Guillotine cutters come in two different blade configuration – single and double. However, keep in mind that a single blade cutter is not as precise and does not cut as clearly as double blade guillotine cutter.
To use a guillotine cutter, hold the cutter between your thumb and index finger and
your cigar in the other.
Look for the part of your cigar wherein the curve of the head starts to flatted out. Insert cigar into cutter, take approximately 1/10th of an inch off in a quick and strong one motion cut or your cigar may be crushed.
If you cut past the cap or even too close to the end of it, your cigar wrapper could start to unravel; taking it off too little can cause the draw of the cigar to be much heavier and increasing the risk of the cigar to go out. A good tip to keep in mind is always maintain a tight grip and try not to let it move while it is being cut.
Bullet or Punch cutter with its key-
To cut your cigar with a punch cutter, gentle push and rotate the circular blade
until it is 1/8th inch and then pull it out. However, bullet cutters will not work
on Figuardo’s.
Cutting a cigar is based very much on your preference and familiarity. Whatever method you choose to use, always ensure that the blades are sharp so that there is no risk of tearing.
Since cutters work differently on different cigars, the key to a good cut is to be
swift, precise and confident.
