Throughout history, fasting has been used by health practitioners as a safe and effective method to heal and prevent diseases. Hippocrates, the father of western medicine, believed that fasting can help the body heal itself. And, in modern days, many health spas and treatment centers in Europe advocate medically supervised fasting to treat numerous health conditions.

 

The principle of fasting is very simple. When you temporarily stop ingesting solids, various systems of the body is allowed to rest.

 

The extra energy gives the body an opportunity to heal itself, burn stored calories and expel toxic substances which were accumulated in our bodies through pollutants in the air we breathe, chemicals in the food (preservatives, colorings and additives) and drinks (alcohol) we consume or even in medications we take.

 

Whilst some people go on a fast to treat certain health conditions, there are others who use fasts to detoxify their bodies or to lose weight.

 

For whatever reasons you decide to go on a fast, you will notice a dramatic weight loss in the first few days of your fast. Fasts can be performed for varying periods of time, from a few days to several weeks or longer.

 

Generally speaking, a 3-day juice fast or sometimes referred as 3-day juice detox diet is by far the most popular as compared with the extended and stringent water fast. It can be done easily over the weekends and is relatively safe. Unlike water fast, juice fast promote better healing and cleansing with increased Vitamins, minerals and live enzymes.

 

 

How to Do a 3 Day Juice Fast

 

Three days before you start a juice fast, try to limit protein intake or even replace with fruits and vegetables. It is also a good idea to eliminate sugars in sodas, caffeinated beverages, snacks, breads and grains. By doing so, it helps to shrink your stomach and make fasting less difficult. If you do not prepare your body for the fast, you may experience severe cramping, nausea and constipation or diarrhea.

 

There are many juices that you can incorporate into your 3-day juice fast, some of which include apples, carrots, celery, beet, zucchini squash, and lettuce. Sprouts, cabbage, barley grass, wheat grass and other similar fruits and/or vegetables are also great for juicing. However, make sure that you take in only fresh juices and ideally, use organic produce.

 

You can start day one of the 3-day juice fast with an apple based juice, a carrot based juice on day two or celery based juice on day three. Remember to also drink lots of water to replace lost fluids as well as to purify your system.

 

Similar to entering a fast, you also want to ease back into solids slowly. Eat only vegetable for the first day, fruits and vegetables on the second and re-introduce breads, grains and protein on the third.

 

Although the benefits of fasting are plentiful, individuals with certain medical conditions and the severely underweight should avoid juice fast. And, it is recommended you consult your health provider before you go on a juice fast.
