Throughout history, fasting has been used by health practitioners as a safe and effective method to heal and prevent diseases. Hippocrates, the father of western medicine, believed that fasting can help the body heal itself. And, in modern days, many health spas and treatment centers in Europe advocate medically supervised fasting to treat numerous health conditions.
The principle of fasting is very simple. When you temporarily stop ingesting solids, various systems of the body is allowed to rest.
The extra energy gives the body an opportunity to heal itself, burn stored calories and expel toxic substances which were accumulated in our bodies through pollutants in the air we breathe, chemicals in the food (preservatives, colorings and additives) and drinks (alcohol) we consume or even in medications we take.
Whilst some people go on a fast to treat certain health conditions, there are others who use fasts to detoxify their bodies or to lose weight.
For whatever reasons you decide to go on a fast, you will notice a dramatic weight loss in the first few days of your fast. Fasts can be performed for varying periods of time, from a few days to several weeks or longer.
