You desire natural-looking loose curls but instead you stepped out of the salon with
a head much like poodle's curly locks – too tight curls. You hated it, it looked
awful, not what you wanted and you swore never to go back to that same hairstylist
again. Yes, a perm gone bad can temporarily ruin your appearance and cause many sleepless
While all perms will loosen up after a few weeks, here are some really simple steps
which you can do to loosen or relax tight curls and survive through a "hairtastrophe"
without feeling like a clown.
Relax Tight Curls Naturally
Loosen Tight Curls Step 1:
As soon as you receive the perm, gently brush or comb through those tight curls with
a wide-tooth comb. If you have a bottle of detangling spray, use it first.
Loosen Tight Curls Step 2:
Get into the shower, wash your hair with a moisturizing shampoo. Then, place a generous
amount of deep conditioner throughout your entire head, massage through and let the
condition work for about 10 to 30 minutes.
Every couple of minutes, comb through your hair with a wide-tooth comb. By shampooing
and conditioning your hair, it will help wash away some of the chemicals and relax
Loosen Tight Curls Step 3:
Rinse well and repeat step 2 a few more times.
Loosen Tight Curls Step 4:
Once out of the shower, spray your hair with a detangling spray and then comb. Gently
press towel against hair to dry slightly, make sure you do not rub or squeeze hair
with the towel. It is best to let your hair dry naturally (air-dry).
In addition, you can try a hot oil treatment to encourage curls to loosen. The heated
oil will help weigh down curls and at the same time, relax tight curls.
You can also use a home straightening kit but be very careful when using such kits
as some may contain harsh chemicals that can damage your hair further.
If you are really desperate, go to another hairstylist and ask for a reverse perm.
Be warned that a reverse perm can damage hair in several ways – from dryness and
hair breakage to the more severe side effects such as hair loss and scalp rashes.
Don’t worry too much about too tight curls. The curls will probably fall off faster
if you shampoo everyday.
