How to Make Soy Candles in 5 Easy Steps

By Holly Campbell

Candles are a must when you want to add a cozy feel to any room or make an intimate night at home more sensual. Recently, soy wax candles are the latest fad and gaining popularity fast because of their qualities – they don’t give out carbon dioxide when burned and are eco-friendly.

Soy candles burn at lower temperatures so they produce virtually no soot or residue, easy to clean up with soap and water. In addition, soy candles also last up to 50% longer than traditional beeswax or paraffin.

Making soy wax candles at home can be great fun, and they are a lot cheaper than picking them up from the store. Furthermore, they make ideal personalized gifts for family and friends especially when you infuse their favorite essential oils for the perfect scent.

You’ll need these materials to make 6 soy candles:

6 small votive candle glasses (you can also use sake cups, teacups, shot glasses or anything that can withstand heat)

500 grams white soy wax

1 teaspoon pure essential oil of your choice (orange, lemon, lime or grapefruit is a great stress reducer)

6 tabbed wicks

1 skewer

6 clothes pegs

double saucepan

ladle

a pair of scissors

How to make your own soy candles:

1. Prepare your work area with newspaper to catch spills, then place votive glasses on top.

2. You can use a wax melter to melt wax. If you don’t own one, melt soy wax in the top of a double saucepan over simmering water. Never melt the wax directly on the stove as there is a risk where the wax will burst into flames.

3. Add essential oil and stir for about 2 minutes.

4. Carefully pour wax into the glasses, using a ladle. Place wicks in each glass, positioning with the skewer. Hold wicks in place by securing at the top with a peg.

5. Leave your homemade soy candles to set overnight. If you find the wax has dipped in the middle of the candles, just melt more wax and top up. Once set, use scissors to trim wicks to ½ cm in length. Crooked wicks can cause uneven burning. Done!

Now, delight your family and friends with your homemade soy wax candles. The fresh zesty citrus scent is sure to lift the spirits, and melt away everyday stress!
