How to Organize a Garage

Many people use their garage to hold more than just their cars. In order to maximize the use of garage space, you need careful planning and organizing. This goes a long way towards reducing some of the clutter while creating extra room for all of your other items. Read our tips on how you can better organize your garage space. First, ask yourself how you want to use the space in the garage even before you start organizing. What items do you want to store in your garage? Knowing these questions will help you organize a garage faster.

If you install cabinets, workbenches, shelves, hooks and baskets you will be able to keep items away in a spot that is convenient and out of the way. Built-in shelves provide plenty of storage room for items such as paint cans, spray bottles, mulch, buckets, automotive supplies, flower pots, and boxes. Also, make sure you arrange your items on the shelves by category and label storage bins or boxes which makes the items easy to find/see at a glance. Always keep dangerous items such as power tools locked up.

However, if you have a small garage, you may want to consider using the upper walls and ceiling of your garage to free up additional space within your garage. The ceiling is also a valuable resource for storage space. You can insert a few hooks to hold things like bicycles, ladders, and luggage. Many people do not make good use of these areas for storage because they can be difficult to reach. The simple solution is to use a ladder, pulleys or a hydraulic lift to help you raise the items into the elevated areas. Now everything is visible and reachable.

The major problem of insufficient garage space is the accumulation of items, some necessary and some not. Hence, it’s a good idea to go through all of your items and decide which ones to keep and which items to get rid. You will be amazed at how much more storage space you get by tossing out unwanted or unused items such as broken toys. Items that are still in good shape can be donated, or sold at your next garage sale or through an online auction.

One last tip on how to organize a garage is, always put things back to where they belong after using them. By doing so, it keeps your garage neat and organized.

With these simple steps and a little effort, organizing your garage is an easy weekend project that will maximize the potential storage space of your garage.
