How to Plan a Great Kids Party

By Holly Campbell

Like most parents, you want your kid's birthday to be really special and memorable. And, you're also likely to be asked by your kid to throw a birthday party. Children love having their friends over to help them celebrate and have fun. Here are some party-planning ideas to help you host a fabulous party that your child will remember for a long time to come.

How to Plan a Birthday Party at Home for Children

1. If possible, start planning your party 4 to 6 weeks ahead. Allow plenty of time for online shopping, cake orders and getting friends, neighbors or family to help.

2. The first place to start when planning a children birthday party is with a birthday party theme. Selecting a theme will help you organize thoughts and then plan all your party supplies – party hats, balloons, confetti, party plates, banners, etc.

When selecting a theme, first ask what your kids would like. Do they have a favorite character, sport, interest or dream that would make a fun party theme?

For instance, if your kid is a big fan of Mickey Mouse, you could set that as the theme. Then shop around for birthday party supplies that are decorated with characters from the Disney family.

The best way to buy cheap party supplies is to shop online; you save oodles of time. There are many large online retailers who specialize in party products and they will often offer you discounts on shipping for larger orders.

3. Decide who will be invited, what kind of food/snacks and drinks to serve and the party venue. Will the party be at home or outside, and compare the pros and cons of both options.

If you want to organize the party elsewhere other than your home, then look for its location and size so as to accommodate all of your guests comfortably. Take extra precautions if there are stairs, swimming pool, glass windows and doors, busy streets, etc.

When it comes to planning the party menu, you want to make sure that no one has food allergies. It's always a good idea to ask each kid's parents just in case a kid happens to have food allergies.

4. Make the invitations. If you rather make your own party invitations than purchasing ready made ones, here's what you can do – take a photo of your kid posing with his or her favorite plush toy.

Print that picture on the front of the invitation cards and write "Mickey & Friends want you to come to (your kid's name) Birthday Party." Be sure to include date, time, place and your phone number to RSVP.

5. When planning games and activities, make sure they are safe and easy for your kid's age group. You can make a pinata, have a pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey game ready or have a kids movie on hand for all to enjoy. For more kids game ideas, you can always search online.

6. You might also want to have prizes and party bags for everyone. You can buy party bags ready made up if you are running short on time but it often works out cheaper to buy everything separately and make them up yourself.

7. Smile and don't forget the camera.

With these tips in mind, planning a fun children party for your child really easy and  you won’t be pulling your hair out!
