How to Start a Scrapbooking Business from Home

By Holly Campbell

Wouldn't it be nice to stay at home, do what you truly love and still make some extra money? Well, if you're creative and love to work on scrapbooks, you can easily turn your hobby into a very lucrative home business and earn decent profits.

Scrapbooking is a wonderful way to preserve memories for any occasion such as weddings, graduations, family tree, retirement, holidays and birthdays.

Many people love to own beautifully custom made keepsakes for various occasions. And, because of busy lifestyles today, many of us can’t find the time to sit down and assemble our mementos into a scrapbook. Therefore the demand for scarpbooks is always strong.

Here are a few great tips to help you start scrapbooking business from home with very little money involved.

Before you start the business, clear out a space in your home where you can work undisturbed. If you don't have an extra room in the house which you can turn into an office, a quiet corner with good ventilation and lighting is good enough.

It's a good idea to choose a place that's near a window so that you can take advantage of the daylight.

To get started, you also need a working table and scrapbook materials such as pens, pencils, glue, coloring materials, scissors, cutters, paper punches, trinkets and lots of paper.

And, if you're a mom with young kids at home, you might want to invest in a filing cabinet with a lock where you can keep all your scrapbook materials. Kids are usually attracted to colorful trinkets and papers so it's better to hide them to avoid accidents.

Once you have everything assembled, begin by making a few samples and take digital pictures of your products.

Post these pictures online along with their short descriptions and their prices. Once you have that in place, you can start marketing your products by sending out e-mails to friends, relative and colleagues inviting them to take a look at your products.

Make sure your email signature has your business address and maybe one sentence that describe your scrapbooking business, or makes people want to visit your website.

You can also ask your friends, relatives and colleagues to invite their friends to take a look at your website. Use your current customers for word-of-mouth marketing. Offer them an incentive such as discounts or other perks to bring you new business. Remember, satisfied customers are your secret marketing weapon.

You may also send out press releases to free public relations websites and join forums to invite people over to your website. Although there are really no guarantees that press releases and open invitations at forums will bring in business, it can still help your website gain some mileage.

There are also many places that will allow you to put up free fliers – think grocery stores, community libraries and on on. Also, make sure you have your business card with you at all times.

Consider small websites that won’t charge you too much to advertise on them.

To get your first batch of customers, you may want to offer some perks. For example, you can offer a 50% discount to your first 10 customers and offer a 20% discount on repeat orders.

The advantage of giving out discounts is, many people will be enticed to buy your product to avail the discounts. However, too many discounts might devalue your products.

One very important thing that will grow your scrapbooking business fast and keep your customers coming back to you is personal service. Remember your customers' names, kids' names and even birthdays will make them feel important and they;re more likely to keep coming back.
