Is Brazilian Waxing Painful?

By Tiffany Moore

Just the thought of Brazilian waxing makes you cringe in pain. Is waxing the bikini region as painful as it sounds? If you're tempted to go for a waxing session but a little apprehensive about it, we tell you honestly what to expect at a Brazilian wax session from start to finish.

What Happens at a Brazilian Bikini Wax Job?

1. You'll need to remove all clothing including your underwear and asked to put on a thin paper thong. Lie down on a lined table, knees apart and up.

2. The therapist will trim down your pubic hair with scissors to about ¼  inch.

3. Baby powder, talcum powder or baby oil will be spread around the genital area to be waxed. This keeps the hot wax from sticking to your skin.

4. Hot wax is spread over the pubic region  using a wax strip. The most common wax mixture is made from natural beeswax and tall oil, which is stronger and more effective at removing the thicker pubic hairs than synthetic waxes.

5. The therapist will then apply a cloth strip over the still-warm wax, pressing firmly so the cloth, hair and wax stick to each other. Once the wax has cooled, she pulls the strip off quickly, in the opposite direction of your hair growth, removing the hairs out by the root.

In most cases, the therapist will ask you to help her hold the skin taut for a cleaner and less painful removal.

6. Tweezers are then used to remove any stubborn stray hairs.

A Brazilian wax session usually takes between 20 to 30 minutes. Your bikini area will stay smooth for at least 3 weeks, depending on the rate of hair growth.

Your first Brazilian wax session is usually the most painful, but frequent visits will reduce the pain factor. The pain you may experience during waxing can range from slight to severe, and last about a few seconds to minutes.

If the pain is unbearable, let your therapist know that you need a little rest. You can also request for topical anesthetics to lessen the pain.

The best time to have a Brazilian wax is a week after your menstruation as the genital area is least sensitive during this period. Avoid going for a wax session before and during menstruation. It's likely to hurt more when premenstrual bloating and hormones make your skin extremely sensitive.

I suggest you take an anti-inflammatory like Tylenol, Alieve or Advil an hour before your appointment to cut down the pain. It also helps a lot if you avoid caffeine or alcohol. Stimulants can cause your skin to be extra sensitive to waxing.

And, relax. You feel more painful when you're tensed. Ensure that your bikini area is clean. Shower, or clean with baby wipes if you don't have time.

It's generally considered safe to get a Brazilian wax during pregnancy. But if your skin is more sensitive, try using a soothing lotion before and after waxing sessions to reduce any additional redness or swelling.

Also make sure you get waxed professionally at a reputable and clean salon or spa.

Brazilian Waxing Aftercare Tips

For the next 24 hours after your Brazilian wax, make sure

No hot baths, swimming or sunbathing.

No heat or UV treatments like sun beds or sauna.

No tight clothing – tight clothing may result in irritation and ingrown hairs.

No scented products including lotions, deodorant, antiperspirant, self tanner or make up.

No touching, scrubbing or rubbing your pubic area – simply put, avoid sex .

So is a Brazilian bikini wax worth the pain and the money? Yes.
