How to Make Fresh Flowers Last Longer

By Louisa Price

Isn’t it wonderful to receive flowers from a special someone? Fresh flowers are lovely to display in the home but they tend to wilt overnight. With a little extra care, it is possible to make any flower arrangement or fresh flowers last longer. Follow these flower care tips for longer-lasting and more vibrant flowers.

How to Make Flowers Stay Fresh

1. Fill a clean vase with water. Add the flower food supplied by your florist to the water in the vase. Flower foods make fresh flowers last longer but it is important to follow the instructions on the flower food packet.

Change the water and flower food every three to four days, or when the flower food solution becomes cloudy. If flower food is not available, an aspirin (not ibuprofen) or sugar, works just as well.

2. Remove any leaves that will be below the waterline. Leaves in water promotes bacterial growth that may restrict water intake by the flowers.

Also, re-cut stems by removing one to two inches with a sharp knife, if possible.

3. Keep yours fresh flowers in a cool place  (65˚F to 72˚F), away from direct sunlight, heating or cooling vents, directly under ceiling fans, or on top of televisions, microwave oven  or radiators.

They cause excess water loss from the fresh flowers, and make them wilt very quickly. To make flowers stay fresh, it is best to place your flowers under cool conditions.

4. If you are buying fresh flowers, look for those with upright, firm petals and buds beginning to open. You can be sure that they will last as long as possible. Avoid yellow, spotted or drooping leaves as they are signs of age.
