If you're a lover of hot and spicy Sichuan cuisine, you wouldn't want to miss mapo tofu (mabo tofu) – silken tofu cubes cooked in fiery hot bean paste topped with minced meat mixture.

Although the widow's real name was forgotten, she was remembered for her one distinctive feature – her pockmarked face. Hence, the name Mapo Tofu (Ma, meaning pockmarked and Po, meaning old woman).
Mapo tofu is very quick and easy to make, inexpensive and makes an appetizing dish to have on a chilly day.
You can use any type of minced meat such as chicken, pork or beef, or even make it vegetarian. And, don't worry if your family can't tolerate spicy dishes, you can moderate the spiciness according to your taste.
