How to DIY Oil and Filter Change

By Paul Coles

Because of the way how most quick-lube shops do business these days, fewer and fewer people have been turning to auto repair shops for regular oil and oil filter change.

Regularly changing your car's engine oil and filter is one of the most important things you can do to keep your car running well. Over time your oil breaks down and your filter becomes clogged with contaminants. Depending upon your driving habits, this may take as few as 3 months or 3,000 miles or be as long as 20,000 miles or 24 months.

So, how to change your oil and  filter? As challenging as it may sound, changing your oil and filter can actually be done easily. All you need to prepare are some rags, a ratchet, an oil filter wrench, funnel, oil catch or recycle container, your new oil, and your new oil filter.

The first thing that you have to do is to drain whatever oil there is in your engine. Make sure that recycle container is positioned correctly in order to catch the oil that would be flowing out once you remove the oil drain plug.

Once you have drained out the oil, replace the plug securely. Now, with the use of your oil filter wrench, remove your old oil filter by turning it clockwise until it comes off.

Most auto repair shops would recommend that, before you put the new filter, you should lubricate first the rubber gaskets with the new oil before filling the filter up with about ⅔ of the new oil. Carefully and securely place the new oil filter and place. Make sure that you do not screw it too tightly nor loosely as this could result in leaks.

To change your engine oil, first consult your car’s manual as to how much oil you need to put in. If you do not have a car manual with you for whatever reasons, you can get in touch with your local auto repair shops and ask them how much oil a car of your make and brand would need.

Insert the funnel in and pour about ¾ of the amount your car would need. With a dipstick, check if you still need to add some more oil until you reach the needed amount. You do not add all the oil in one dumping as there might still be some oil inside that has been left unaccounted for.

If oil and filter change is something that is unfamiliar to you, then you can always head to the different auto repair shops. They would be able to change your oil and your car’s filter in a matter of minutes.
