Does the Peanut Butter Diet Work

By Brenda Hoffman

I came upon the Peanut Butter Diet entirely by accident – money was tight during college days and to stretch my buck, I ate peanut butter jelly sandwich for breakfast and lunch almost everyday. I didn't put on an ounce. On the contrary, I lost a fair bit of weight! So, when the diet was introduced in 2002, I wasn't the least surprised.

The Peanut Butter Diet is a controlled calorie diet plan; it allows 1500 calories daily for women and 2200 calories per day for men.

You're allowed to have 4 to 6 tablespoons of peanut butter a day. But before you get all excited, the Peanut Butter Diet also requires moderate daily activity daily which translates to 45 minutes of exercise to lose approximately ½ pound per week.

Your breakfast on the Peanut Butter Diet includes whole grain cereal, fat free milk, and a banana.

Lunch is generally a peanut butter and jelly (whole wheat bread) sandwich and a piece of fruit, which can be an apple, or tangerine.

You'll also get to enjoy a snack, and you might have guessed, snacks are peanut butter based. Think peanut butter and celery sticks.

As for dinner, peanut butter is off the menu. Instead, you'll eat lots of veggies and fruits, and lean protein.

The good news is you'll find yourself slowly eliminating whole milk dairy products, margarine, mayonnaise, white bread, and refined sugar from your diet.

If you're keen on the diet, make sure you don't have any nut allergies, and I suggest you buy good quality, healthy peanut butter brands. That is, less refined peanut butter with no trans fat, hydrogenated oils, or preservatives.

Opt for natural peanut butter with a few additives such as Skippy Natural Creamy, Crazy Richard's Natural Chunky, Naturally More, Smucker's Natural Chunky and MaraNatha Organic Creamy Roasted Peanut Butter.

My thoughts on the peanut butter diet for weight loss? At the end of the day, any comparable eating plan that advocates calorie control and exercise will also produce the same weight loss results. Enough said.
