Reverse (Backwards) Diet Review

By Brenda Hoffman

The Reverse Diet, also known as Backwards Diet, is based on the old adage "breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, dine like a pauper". Its founder, Tricia Cunningham, successfully lost 172 pounds in just 9 months, only by eating her meals in reverse order.

We are fully aware that to lose weight, we should eat breakfast. Eating a meal at the start of the day provides us with plenty of energy. If you consume a large amount of calories at dinner, and less calories at breakfast, or you even skip breakfast, then the Reverse Diet will help you change your eating habits. With the Reverse Diet, you eat your dinner for breakfast and breakfast for dinner.

Food eaten in the evening does not get burned off as efficiently as that eaten in the morning. Your body burns most calories and fat during the day, and far less during the night, while you are asleep. The excess calories are more likely to be turned into fat. If you consume more calories during the day, you burn calories more effectively and hence you lose weight.

Reverse Diet Meal Plan

The best thing about the Reverse Diet is that you need not change what you eat. You only change the order you eat. However, if eating meat and vegetables for breakfast does not appeal to you, you can still go on this diet without changing what you eat. Increase the amount you normally eat for breakfast and reduce your the size of your meals as the day progresses. That way, your dinner becomes the smallest meal of the day.

And, if you don't have a big appetite for breakfast, make sure your lunch is larger than your dinner. However, remember to stay within your daily calorie allowance.

Among the foods and beverages forbidden to eat are salt, sugar, caffeine, alcohol and carbonated drinks. Instead, Tricia Cunningham recommends you consume all fresh and frozen vegetables including potatoes, along with protein such as red meat, all seafood, chicken, turkey, all seafood, and eggs.

White cheese, fat-free sour cream, salad dressing, extra virgin olive oil and skim milk are also encouraged. Low-sodium margarine, garlic, all spices except salt, orange juice, lemons and pasta (in moderation and small portions) are allowed as well.

In summary, the rules of the Reverse Diet is simple – start the day with a big breakfast, eat a smaller lunch and end your day with a tiny dinner.
