Skin Care for Different Skin Types – Oily, Normal, Dry and Sensitive Skin

By Tiffany Moore

Looking after your skin well can help delay the signs of aging and keep it glowingly healthy for years to come. Certain treatments and skin care regimen must be followed for every skin types. It is very important first to know the different types of skin, especially your own skin type, before deciding to use a certain product, or before undergoing a specific beauty treatment.

Such knowledge will make you aware of what is complementary to you, and what might cause adverse effects as using the wrong skin care products would do more harm than good. For example, you may damage your skin by applying an oil-based cream to your already oily skin. Your skin, particularly your face may have an acne or pimple breakout.

Normal skin is the best skin type since it is the least problematic and easiest to look after. How do you know if you have normal skin? Wipe your face with a tissue in the morning. If it shows no signs of oiliness, then your skin belongs to the normal type.

Normal skin has an even tone, is soft, and has perfectly smooth texture. It has barely visible pores and radiant pinkish complexion, with no imperfections.

For normal skin, a good skincare routine consisting of moisturizing, toning and cleaning is necessary. Also, apply a facial mask once a week to nourish and enhance skin’s elasticity.

Oily skin needs special care than normal skins as such skin type is prone to pimples, zits and acne breakouts. Teenagers usually suffer from pimples or acne more because of hormonal imbalance in their system. On the other hand, adults can also have oily skin due to excessive production of sebum in their bodies.

You know you have oily skin when it appears too shiny and feels very oily or greasy. You will also notice enlarged pores on your skin and if they are clogged, they may cause nasty pimple breakouts.

People with oily skin type must wash their face with specially formulated facial cleansing agents as often as possible in order to prevent dirt and dust particles from sticking to the face, leading to clogged pores. You may also want to use rose water or an astringent after washing your face to balance and control sebum production. This will help keep your face ultra clean and shine-free all day.

Follow up with a light non-greasy facial moisturizer that has an SPF 15 or higher to lock in moisture and protect against destructive environmental damage. Try putting your moisturizer in the fridge in the summer months for a refreshing, cool feeling. In the winter months, warm it in your hands before applying.

Dry skin type has a thin texture that looks incredibly dry, sometimes red and patchy. You may also experience flakiness and tightness on your face. Dry skin needs deep moisturizing to fight skin dryness and protect from moisture loss. Look for these ingredients – ceramides, hyaluronic acid, dimethicone or  glycerine – on the product label.

Sensitive skin. As the word "sensitive" suggests, this skin type reacts easily to sun, dirt and dust as well as most cream, lotions and soaps. If it gets irritated, the skin may have red patches and can be unbearably itchy.

If you have sensitive skin, be extra careful when choosing skin care products. Use mild products that are designed for sensitive skin. Never use perfumed lotions and soaps with strong smells as they can irritate sensitive skin. Try Cetaphil, Eucerin or CereVe.
