Skin Care for Different Skin Types – Oily, Normal, Dry and Sensitive Skin

By Tiffany Moore

Taking care of your skin is essential for keeping a healthy body. Certain treatments and skin care regimen must be followed for every skin types. It is very important first to know the different types of skin, especially your own skin type, before deciding to use a certain product, or before undergoing a specific treatment.

Such knowledge will make you aware of what is complementary to you, and what products you will have adverse effects. Using the wrong skin care products would do more harm than good. For example, you may damage your skin by applying an oil-based cream to your already oily skin. Your skin, particularly your face may have an acne or pimple breakout.

There are different skin types – oily, normal, T-zone type, dry skin, sensitive and combination skin. These skin types are defined in more detail below together with the right skin care regimen for each.

People with oily skin need to have the appropriate and maximum type of  skin care as they are prone to pimples, acne and breakouts. Teenagers usually suffer from pimples or acne more because of hormonal imbalance in their system. On the other hand, adults can also have oily skin due to excessive production of sebum in their bodies.

You know you have oily skin when it appears and feels oily, greasy as well as shiny. There is an unnecessary presence of shine on your skin's surface. People with oily skin type must wash their face with soap and water or cleansing agents as often as possible so as not to allow dirt and dust particles from sticking.

You will also notice enlarged pores on your skin and if pores are open, they may cause pimple breakouts.

For oily skin, there are specially formulated facial washes. You may also want to use rose water along with an astringent and put in a cotton dab as often as possible. This will keep your face clean and oil-free. Do not use soap very often.

Choose a light moisturizer that is oil-free, so you are not putting any additional oil on your face. Always wet your face first as it aids in absorption.

A good weather tip is to put your moisturizer in the fridge in the summer months for a refreshing, cool feeling when you apply it, and in the winter months, warm it in your hands before applying.

People blessed with normal skin are lucky as they do not need to be extra careful when it comes to skin care. It just needs a regular caring routine and cleansing.

You can check if you have normal skin by wiping your face with a tissue in the morning. If the tissue has no signs of oiliness, then you have normal skin.

Also, normal skin has an even tone, is soft, and has smooth texture. It has barely visible pores and radiant pinkish complexion, with no imperfections.

For normal skin, you must do a routine moisturizing, toning and cleaning. You can also apply a facial mask once a week to keep your skin fresh and smooth.

Dry skin type has a thin texture. It looks incredibly dry, sometimes red and patchy as well. Persons with dry skin type experience dryness in their face even in the morning. It needs to be moisturized to counteract the over dryness.

Creams and facial washes are required for people suffering from dry skin type. Although dry skin type has an advantage from the rest of other skin types (not susceptible to any pimple and acne breakouts), dry skin can also be more prone to wrinkles.

For dry skin, it must be hydrated with lots of water. The body produces little amount of sebum so it needs more moisture.

Moisturizing strengthens skin and protects it against moisture loss. It is recommended you apply night cream before you go to bed.

Sensitive skin. As the word "sensitive" suggests, this skin type reacts easily to sun, dirt and dust as well as most cream, lotions and soaps. If it gets irritated, the skin may have red patches and can be really itchy.

For sensitive skin, it is best to take extreme caution in choosing the products that you apply. Use mild products only. Never use perfumed lotions and soaps with strong smells as they can irritate sensitive skin.
