Easy Entertaining Recipe Ideas – Spicy Sloppy Joes

By Rebecca Garcia

What do you get when you put a bunch of rowdy guys, bottles of chilled beer and Sloppy Joes together? Yup, that's right, happy faces! When the guys are hungry, you can forget about the word "healthy" and don't even think of sneaking in veggies. Just give them red meat and carbs, your popularity will soar instantly!

So, when the guys come over on a game night, I serve them a no-fork-dinner – Spicy Sloppy Joes accompanied with an enormous pile of roasted parsnip fries with balsamic vinegar and rosemary. It's super easy to make, ready in a snap, great tasting and a definite crowd-pleaser.

Spicy Sloppy Joes Recipe

(serves 4)

Ingredients:

1¼ pounds ground beef sirloin

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 can (15-ounce) tomato sauce

1 medium onion, chopped

1 small red bell pepper, chopped

1 celery stalk, chopped

3 garlic cloves, minced

¼ cup ketchup

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

2 tablespoons red pepper flakes

salt and pepper, to taste

4 crusty rolls, split, lightly buttered and toasted

How to make:

In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add ground beef and cook until no longer pink, about 5 to 8 minutes. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

When the meat has browned, add onion, bell pepper, celery, and garlic to the skillet. Cook for about 5 to 7 minutes, until the veggies are softened.

Add tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and red pepper flakes. Reduce heat to simmer, stir well and cook sloppy joe mixture for a further 6 to 8 minutes.

With the help of a large spoon, pile sloppy meat onto toasted, buttered bun bottoms and cover with bun tops.

Here's a tip to make sloppy joes less messy to eat – cut pockets in the buns with a sharp knife, making sure not to cut through and then spoon meat into cavities. Enjoy!
