5 Fun Ideas to Keep Preschoolers Busy While You Cook
By Holly Campbell
When kids are on summer break and the weather is hot, they can get really cranky.
Summer crafts will keep them occupied for hours and provide tons of fun. Here are
some great ideas which are really easy and super wallet-
1. In summer, kids can easily find things such as seed pods or grasses which they can use for crafts. Children can create nature collection collages by gluing these items to a sturdy piece of cardboard and spray paint or glue glitter on them. Use them to decorate your child’s bedroom.
2. Perhaps your kids enjoy collecting wild flower seed heads. They can make dried flower arrangement in a homemade vase. Children can decorate the outside of empty formula cans or coffee cans with gift wrapper and use them to store their collection.
3. A vase for summer bouquets, fresh or dried, is another easy summer craft. A simple vase can be made from a tin can. Soup cans work particularly well because they are smooth on the outside and rather narrow. However, make sure you file off any sharp spurs on the inside opening before giving it to your kids.
Start by cutting a piece of construction paper or other colored paper to fit around the sides of the can. Then glue to the outside of the can, but first it needs to be decorated.
The vase cover can be decorated in several ways. Kids can draw a summer scene on the paper and then decorate it with glued on glitter or small stickers of summer things.
Another idea is for kids to write their name in large letters, and glue beans, seeds, or glitter onto the letters. Allow all glue to dry completely before attaching the paper to the outside of the can.
Add water and fresh flowers or leave it dry for dry flowers.
4. Kids can also recycle a can and use it as a trinket container or as a holder to
put pens, pencils, and markers. To make them real summer crafts for kids, glue grass
seed heads and found seed pods to the paper in a decorative way.
5. Jar vases make good summer crafts for kids, too. Canning jars make particularly cute vases, but any cast off mayonnaise, pickle, or other jar, even plastic ones, can work equally well.
Use a clean and dry jar, get kids tie an attractive ribbon around the opening and decorate the outside with glued on beads and buttons.
