Is Your Boyfriend Making You Fat?
By Diane Hanson
As summer approaches and the weather gets warmer, most of us like to get outside, do some exercises, frolic in the sun and have fun outdoors. While you're enjoying yourself in the sun, whether a day at the beach or a few hours working in the yard, do you practise sun safety to protect yourself from harmful UV radiation?
If you’re Australian, you probably grew up with the message “Slip! Slop! Slap!”. With this wise words of advice, let’s be reminded again.
Slip on a protective clothing made of tightly woven material that you can’t see through when held against the light. It should cover your arms and legs.
Slop on sunscreen or sun block a minimum sun protection factor (SPF) rating of 15. When applied 30 minutes prior to sun exposure, sunscreen makes an effective barrier between the skin and UV radiation. If you’re spending more than 30 minutes outdoors, an SPF of 45 is recommended. Most of the sun's rays can still come through the clouds on an overcast day; so use sun protection even on cloudy days.
Slap on a hat, preferably one with a brim of 4 inches or more, or a Keppie hat with
a flap to protect your face and ears, as well as the back of your neck from being
burned.
Seek shade . Avoid peak sunshine hours between 10 o’clock in the morning and 4 o’clock in the afternoon; find shade under an umbrella or a tree with a thick covering of leaves.
Slide on sunglasses with total UV protection; use sunglasses that block at least 99 percent of UVB rays and at least 95 percent of UVA rays.
Remember, hydration is important in staying cool in the sun – water cools the body and helps avoid heat stroke. Drink plenty of fluids, preferably plain water and steer off caffeinated beverages such as colas, tea and coffee.
Wherever you go, “Slip! Slop! Slap! Seek and Slide! Have fun outside but don’t get fried...”
