Perfect Suntan Tips

By Tiffany Moore

I love summer. The sun, sea and sand make me alive. It always feels great to step outside and bask in the warmth of the sun after months of brutally cold winter. And, I'm know many of you like myself, love to have this trendy summer accessory – sun-kissed skin – to show off.

There are various options available to get a tan but I still enjoy getting a suntan under the sun. It is free, relaxing and I am always happy with the results. Here are a few really great suntanning tips to help you get the perfect long-lasting suntan this summer.

How to Suntan Properly

1. Exfoliate. If you have dead skin on your skin's surface, it will block the sun and you are less likely to achieve the tan you are after.

When you exfoliate with a loofah pad, make sure not to scrub too vigorously. You should exfoliate gently so that you will not damage the good skin underneath.

2. Wear a moisturizing suntan lotion. It is an absolute must. That way, your skin tans gradually instead of tanning very quickly, which can result in a sunburn.

The suntan lotion still allows you to get a long-lasting tan and at the same time, avoid sunburn as well as sun damage.

If you desire a dark tan, use a suntan lotion that has a SPF factor of 8 or 10 with Vitamins A and E.

Also, make sure that you apply the suntan lotion all over your body in a slow and deliberate movement, paying extra attention to the back of your knees, elbows and ankles. Do not miss any spots and do not use baby oil.

Baby oil actually enhances the harmful effect of the sun's ultraviolet rays and fry you.

3. Tan for only 1-2 hours a day. To get a smooth and even tan, make sure that you tan 1 to 2 hours daily every day instead of spending hours laying out at a time.

You will not get the perfect tan in a day but you will after several days in a row of being exposed to the sun. When you tan only for 1 to 2 hours everyday, you prevent the sun from breaking up collagen and skin cells.

4. If it is possible, get some kind of reflective blanket to lie on when you are suntanning. Your whole body, including the insides and outsides of your legs will also get a tan. Flip every 15 to 30 minutes.

5. To keep the suntan for as long as it is possible, nourish your skin with Vitamin A from the inside and outside. Include milk, eggs, apricots, spinach, carrot as well as all the red and yellow vegetables and fruit into your daily diet. It is also a great idea to have a glass of carrot juice daily.

6. Also, moisturize religiously day and night with creams after you suntan. Usually your skin gets dry after the suntanning and moistened skin keeps tan much longer than the dry one.

A lotion that contains aloe will make your tan last and also cool your skin as aloe is rich in skin soothing properties.

7. You should also drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated. The more moisture that your skin has, the more radiant it will look.

With these helpful suntanning tips, you are sure to get the best long-lasting tan this summer that you have ever had. Have fun!
