Why Asian Food Saves You Money

By Justina Lee

As an Asian and proud of my ethnic identity, I must say the joy of eating Asian style is its communal nature. We would gather round the table during meal time and share whatever is on the table with a bowl of rice. You eat only just enough of each entree so that everyone in the family can taste everything. This practice not only saves you money but it is a great way for family bonding. Like what my mother would say " a family that eat together, stays together".

Asian food can be really cheap and filling for people with limited budget. Asian markets are one of the cheapest places to shop if you want good quality fresh produce. If you happen to live anywhere with a Chinatown or an Asian speciality market, you can save almost 40% in your weekly grocery budget.

Cooking Asian food is great for people who are interested in economizing and eating healthy, without sacrificing taste.

Rice, the cheap filler:
A typical Asian diet is characterized by consumption of grains and breads. Rice and rice products is a staple in most Asian countries and provides the carbohydrate needs of Asians.

Rice is very inexpensive and economical to eat rice at most meals. If you buy your rice in 10 kilo bags or more, each meal worth of rice (¼ cup pre-cooked rice) is about 30 cents per person.

Rice can be served steamed, boiled, or stir fried with a small quantity of vegetables and meat. Moreover, by having a bowl of rice, you are eating a large volume of water which keeps you fuller for a longer period and this in turn stops you from snacking.

More Vegetables:
Vegetables are a unified part of an Asian meal. Vegetables are not only cheaper than meats, they also keep you healthy with bountiful amounts of essential vitamins and fiber – you save on healthcare in the long run.

Cabbage, scallions, dark and leafy vegetables, bean sprouts are some of the many types of vegetables largely consumed by Asians daily.

Less Animal Protein:
Another notable aspect of an Asian meal is the use of legume-based proteins such as soy milk and tofu. Tofu, soft or firm is the cheapest form of protein available. At less than $1.00 per kilo, it is an ingredient widely used in Asian dishes.

Also, Asian cooking incorporates many different types of nuts in soups, noodle dishes, salads and main courses. Nuts and legumes are not only a cheap yet good source of protein, they  are also rich in fibre, vitamins and minerals.

By eating less meat, more vegetables and a lot of rice, you have healthy and satisfying meals for far less expense with Asain food.
